We are seeing an increase in the number of people wanting to correct, what they wrongly believe are ‘horsey’ teeth, not realising that their phone is creating a inaccurate photo.
“In real life, their teeth are often perfectly fine” says Jatin Desai. “We would like to warn patients about our obsession with taking selfies is leading to a rise in dental dysmorphia”.
The picture is taken quite close, so the image can be distorted.
1- Teeth often look more protruding than they are in real life and appear goofy. As teeth are at the centre of the image, people are increasingly, and understandably, driven to make them look nicer.
2- The photos will unquestionably exaggerate defects, they can also be misleading.
3- Selfies have become the most popular way for women to appraise their looks, especially as many now use them to re-apply their make-up on the move and to check their hair.
We currently talk several patients a month out of needless treatment.
It’s always been thought that the two front teeth look more attractive and youthful being a little more dominant with a step in length between these and the next two.
It creates a youthful smile and it’s a highly aesthetic, natural, feminine, attractive in appearance.
However if your selfies are taken very close it can be distorted and exaggerate the size of the two front teeth, this has caused an increase in demand for a reduction in this natural dominance of the front two teeth.
What we can do to help smile dysmorphia
Before diving in with treatment we will take some photos using our digital camera to see what’s really going on before and we dissuade approximately two to three patients each week from treatment and for many others will recommend simple alignment of front teeth with clear aligners instead of major intervention work- and we recommend using a selfie stick to take a better photo.
Please take selfies but be realistic when checking your appearance use a good mirror in natural light – this is all you need to judge your smile.
If you feel you are in any way worried about the shape and look of your smile, we would be very happy to see you and to provide you honest advice on your smile.
